Idol

Maybe idol isn't the right word for what this is about. More like role model. But I think idol fits fine. Lets go with idol.

I don't have one. One of the things that I miss about my life, is the fact that I have no role model. No person I want to go upto today and say, proudly, look, I did this. No teachers, no professors, no uncles, aunts or elder siblings. Suppose I were to win a big award for something [thanks to me watching the Oscars right now]. Say someone were to ask me, who was the person who inspired you ? I would have to lie. I would have to think of someone, and lie. Because in truth, I don't have one.

I do have people who intimidate me though, because they are so damn good at what they do. I remember seeing Dr. M at Landmark once, he taught me math for the IIT-JEE classes - if there ever was a teacher that I was in awe of, it was him - and how I proudly walked upto him and told him where I was going to go for graduate school. For once, I thought I would get a compliment, redeemed myself for the slack performance in JEE. He gave me a blank look - no congratulations, no way to go boyo. I quickly made some remark about the weather, thanked him and walked away, leaving him wondering what I was thanking him for. I couldn't have told him even if I wanted to.

Not everyone has an idol. I don't have one, and I don't think I ever had. Until I read your post, I never even thought about it before, and it never occurred to me that I don't have an idol.

hmm. i dont have an idol.. well i have this amalgam of an idol.. if that makes sense at all.. i pick and choose.. things that i like out of several people and make a sort of .. imaginary idol for myself..( i can never live up to that.. sigh)..

You guys come to work too early ! Except Khushee of course, since she lives down under.

Hmmm... maybe thats why I was hesitant to use the word idol. This was sparked off by that Raymonds ad. The one where this guy is getting married and his old school principal comes to the wedding. He walks his wife upto him and gets his blessing. That sorta stuff. Corny, but I would love to have a relationship like that with someone. I don't.

And I guess thats okie. Right ?

LadyK: It was Dr. Muralidharan, of TCS and Math Olympiad fame. You probably went to IITBalu, I went a bit lower and went with Prof. Ananthan ;)

Grrl: That is an entirely different issue dearie, living upto it is a whole new ball game. Well, in your case, since it is imaginary, all you have to do is to snip a few ends here and there, and presto ! you have yourself as your imaginary idol ;)

Probably ! That would be one helluva coinkidink huh !!!

Yes, I remember his precocious little daughter. Anyone that age, reading Vedic Math... I say be careful around ;) We usually didnt have class at his house, we had it at that school in Anna Nagar - PS Matric was it ? and then at Krishnawamy Matric (two different branches in Anna Nagar). Prof. A is still teaching though, along with his son. Dr. M left this group to carry on with a better life ;)

Sure... we are starting an Orkut group.. ex students of Ananthan-Ramamoorthy-Murli, the staunch enemies of Balu-TRS-Santhanam (I think I got the names mixed up, help LadyK).

Booze is on the house... provided you can solve that problem from I.E.Irodov ;)
